The original carriage house was built about 1880, the same time as the main house, but it was not maintained very well over the years. As a result, the beams and timbers rotted beyond repair and the building had to be removed. We took it down board by board and saved as much of the lumber as possible. We donated most of the siding boards to the Caroline County Historic Socity to be used to replace wood on other buildings of the same era that are being restored around the county.

We used the back door for the top of the table that is now in the dining area and the mantel is made ftom some of the beams. The coat hooks behind the front door were on the walls of the old carriage house to hold small tools, we assume. We cleaned the multiple layers of paint off of them and mounted them on a small peice of the old siding. With these small remnants of the original structure we have tried to hold on to the past and make it a part of the new.
